April 27, 2009. Bioethics Defense Fund issued the following statement in response to the letter by Harvard law professor Mary Ann Gledon declining to participate in the Notre Dame commencement ceremony honoring President Barack Obama:
미국 생명윤리수호재단 (Bioethics Defense Fund)는 버락 오바마 대통령에게 명예 법학 박사 학위를 수여하는 노틀담 대학교의 졸업식에 참석하지 않겠다는 하버드 법대 교수 메리 앤 글랜든의 서신에 대해 다음과 같은 성명을 발표했다:
Mary Ann Glendon is a remarkable woman who once again shows the world what it means to be a pro-life feminist. She is a human rights expert who knows exploitation when she sees it. As a Harvard law professor and former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, Glendon has often used her influential voice to bring attention to the words of Alice Paul, the original drafter of the Equal Rights Amendment, who recognized that "abortion is the ultimate exploitation of women."메리 앤 글랜든은 다시 한번 생명을 수호하는 여성운동가의 참모습을 세상에 보여준 훌륭한 여성이다. 그녀는 노동력 착취에 대해 잘 알고 있는 인권 전문가이다. 글랜든은 하버드 법대 교수이자 미국의 전 교황대사로서 자신의 영향력을 발휘하여 남녀평등헌법 수정안의 초안을 쓴 앨리스 폴의 발언이 관심을 끌도록 지지하였다.
“Professor Glendon is a woman of principle who will not be exploited by anyone for any purpose," said Bioethics Defense Fund vice president and senior counsel Dorinda C. Bordlee. "Her gracious yet compelling letter declining the highly prestigious Laetare Medal from the University of Notre Dame due to their scandalous decision to honor her former law student is yet another example of her uncompromising courage.”

As a Notre Dame alumnus, BDF president and general counsel Nikolas T. Nikas (BA, 79; MA 81) urged citizens to join Bishop D’Arcy in his prayer asking “Our Lady to intercede for the university named in her honor, that it may recommit itself to the primacy of truth over prestige.”
